What does this apparel represent?

In the sagas we hear about Aegishjalmur, or the Helm of Awe, some kind of magical object or symbol that allows the dwarf-dragon Fafnir to overpower his enemies.

A corresponding Aegishjalmur symbol is found in the 18th-century Icelandic grimoires; It is a magical runic stave, and according to the text, warriors should draw the symbol on their forehead for strength and courage in battle, and to strike fear into the hearts of their enemeis.
