What does this jewelry represent?
The signet of this stunning gold ring features a traditional Viking representation of Sleipnir, the impossible eight-legged steed of Odin.
Sleipnir is an impossible being because of the nature of his conception. Loki, the trickster, turned himself into a mare in order to distract a mighty stallion and get himself out of a tight spot.
The stallion impregnated Loki in the form of the mare, and the result was Sleipnir.
Loki gave the young eight-legged horse to Odin as a steed. Sleipnir could move with ease between the nine worlds of Norse mythology, including down to Helheim, something that was impossible for most beings.
Sleipnir has become a symbol of overcoming limits and conquering the impossible.
The setting of the ring is decorated in traditional Mammen style artwork, popular in Denmark in the second half of the 10th century.
