What does this jewelry represent?
The Vikings had a very different vision of the universe to the one that most people hold today.
The Norse cosmos consisted of nine distinct worlds, all held within the roots and branches of Yggdrasil, the mighty world tree that represented the natural forces that hold the universe together.
It was the task of Thor to protect the worlds of gods and men, Asgard and Midgard, from the chaotic forces of the giants, for which he used his mighty hammer Mjolnir.
Mjolnir became a symbol of divine protection among the Vikings and was a popular amulet symbol.
This bronze pendant combines these two potent Viking symbols, depicting Yggdrasil growing out of Mjolnir as its roots and trunk.
