To the Vikings, the runes were not just an alphabet. In the right hands, they were also a powerful tool for conducting magic. We know very little about how the Vikings conducted rune magic, but some later magical grimoires survive from 18th century Iceland containing several magical runic staves.

One of the most popular symbols from these books is Vegvisir, also known as the Norse compass. A powerful wayfinding symbol; use it, and you will never lose your way, even if you do not know where you are going.

This was probably the symbol of Viking explorers and sailors, but in modern Asatru, it is a symbol of spiritual guidance.
