Elevating the prom dress : Picking the perfect accessories for your outfit

Prom is a one-of-a-kind event in the lives of all teenagers, and most can barely wait to attend.

However, it’s not as easy as it may seem at first glance.

Finding the perfect outfit can be quite challenging since there are so many different options to choose from.

Whether you want a classic ballgown or something less traditional like a jumpsuit, you will most likely have to spend quite a lot of time browsing through stores, both real and online, before finding your dream piece.

But just because you’ve found your dream fit doesn’t mean the work is done. You still have to accessorize.

More often than not it’s this step that turns out to be even more confusing because you must find the balance between too much and too little.

If you’re not sure which items you need to add to the ensemble to make it really stand out, here are a few things to consider.

Why accessorize in the first place?

First and foremost, it is essential to determine why you’d have to add accessories to an outfit in the first place.

These additional items infuse your own personal style into the outfit, so even if you have to pick an outfit that is really formal and doesn’t fit your standard look, you can let your individuality shine through with the help of accessories.

Some people are afraid of over-accessorizing, but there’s definitely a way to make an outfit like that work; you just need to learn how to layer jewelry for maximum effect.

With that being said, there are definitely some accessories that fit some outfits more than others.

However, the only formula you should follow is that which lets you create the look you envisioned in your mind.

An outfit that helps you feel confident is always the best choice.

So, depending on what you’re looking to create, you’ll need accessories that are playful, austere, and mature, or which belong to alternative styles and subcultures.

Jewelry

When you’re thinking about accessories, jewelry is most likely the first thing that comes to mind.

The safest choice when it comes to a prom outfit is to go for the “less is more” look.

Small, understated pieces with a minimalist design will never look out of place, no matter what your dress looks like.

These pieces will enhance the overall ensemble in a way that doesn’t overwhelm the design of the dress.

It is a good option, especially if your dress is already very vibrant and features beadwork, sequins, or other large details, such as sleeves made entirely out of lace or an asymmetric hemline.

The gown is the central piece of an outfit like that, and picking jewelry that is too bold can make the outfit feel a little too chaotic instead of underlining its strengths.

For example, a simple pair of stud earrings can really be the missing piece to creating a perfect look, even though they’re so tiny and you might think they won’t change anything at all.

Pearls are better if your dress is black or navy blue, while diamonds amplify light hues much better.

The cut

You can also choose your accessories depending on the cut of your dress. If you haven’t done this before, you should practice with different items and see which one fits you best.

The items that fit will also depend on additional factors, such as your haircut. Nonetheless, there are some rules that can guide you throughout this process.

For instance, if you plan on wearing a strapless or one-shoulder dress, you can opt for a pair of long, dramatic earrings or a pearl necklace.

A V-neck dress would look great with a thick gold necklace, while a high neckline can be considered an accessory on its own, so you might want to accessorize with bracelets instead and tie your hair up to accentuate the collar.

The perfect shoes

High heels might seem like a must for prom, but it’s crucial to choose something that is comfortable and that will allow you to move around and remain pain-free for the entire evening.

If your dress is shorter, the shoes will most likely be more important for the overall outfit since they’ll be more visible.

Strappy sandals, elegant ballet flats, and kitten heels will look equally amazing and refined.

If you’re not comfortable in heels and don’t believe that you’ll enjoy wearing a pair for several hours, it is better to choose short heels or flats.

If you know you’ll wear a long gown, the classic choice is a pair of embellished heels.

There are many pairs out there adorned with jewels and intricate designs.

A pair with a chunkier heel can be a lifesaver if you’ll need to wear heels to avoid dragging the hem on the ground but are wary of stilettos.

The right bag

The bag you bring to prom should be just the right size to carry your essentials for the evening, meaning your phone, keys, and some makeup items.

A clutch or small handbag would be the best choice, ideally one with metallic, satin, or velvet details that will make it look a bit more festive compared to a bag you carry on a daily basis.

Gold accents or embroidery add a touch of glamor as well and will make the clutch feel more cohesive.

The hairstyle

Your hair can serve as an accessory as well, so choose the style carefully and don’t rush to pick a tiara or hairpin right away.

Go through more options before settling on something you’d like. If you’re thinking about wearing an updo, adding some delicate accessories will add a touch of elegance to a simple braided bun.

If you’d rather keep your hair down, you can count on a glittering headband. As with all other details, the hair items you pick must fit the vibe of the entire look.

Choosing the perfect outfit for prom is definitely not a simple task, and finding the ideal accessories can feel like even more of a hassle.

You should aim for balance and harmony with your outfit, so be patient and trust the process. It’s the best way to put together the perfect look.
