What does this jewelry represent ?
Among the many artifacts we’ve found which date back to the Viking age, the axe found at Mammen is one of the most significant.
The intricate detailing on it can be interpreted as either Christian or Pagan; it’s interesting to see how these two religions overlap.
“Stele” is a stone or wooden slab which were often used as monuments or even graves.
This pendant takes the style of the Mammen axe and puts it onto a miniature stele, just as the Vikings would have done.
