Yggdrasil was also a symbol of Norse knowledge, in particular in relation to the runes. The Norns, the Norse fates, sat at the base of Yggdrasil and formed the fate of men by carving runes into the bark of the tree.
Odin hung himself from the tree, pierced by his own spear, for nine days and nine nights in order to gain knowledge of the runes.
For the Vikings, Yggdrasil represented the greater universe and the interconectivity of things, as well as the power of knowledge to shape the future.
