While we usually hear the stories of Norse mythology from the perspective of the Viking gods, there is more than one way to interpret any story.Â
Fenrir was a mighty wolf, one of the offspring of Loki with the giantess Angrboda. The gods so feared the potential power of these offspring that they put each of them somewhere in the world where they could do no harm.
In the case of Fenrir, they tricked the wolf into putting on a pair of unbreakable chains, convincing him that it was a game, as none of the gods were strong enough to force the wolf into the shackles.
When Fenrir complained about his unfair treatment, they jammed a sword in his mouth, wedging his jaws open.
According to the Ragnarok prophecy, Fenrir lies in wait. But when the end of the world comes, he will break his chains and run through the worlds of the Norse cosmos devouring everything before him.
He will even devour Odin himself, getting revenge for the way that the gods treated him and his family.
This Fenrir pendant uses traditional Viking artistic styles, elongating the body of the wolf, and curling it to make patterns.
It represents the ferocious power of the wolf in nature, the concept of revenge, and the idea that all stories have more than one perspective.
