What does this jewelry represent?

Brooches were an essential fashion statement in the Viking world. More than elegant pieces, they were used to secure clothing in the time before zippers and buttons. Brooch design was an important element of Viking culture and style.

This round bronze brooch is based on an example from Finland dating to the 10th century. It uses the Borre art style, which features ring chains, knots, gripping beast heads, and even tiny heads of ribbon animals.
