Thor, the god of Thunder, was considered the ideal warrior and the strongest of the Norse gods. As such, he was tasked with protecting Asgard, the realm of the gods, and Midgard, the realm of men, from the chaotic forces of the giants. He did this with his hammer Mjolnir.
During the Viking age, Mjolnir pendants were widely worn as a symbol of protection. The hammer was also worn well into the Christian period as a symbol of continued allegiance to the old gods.
This stunning copper Mjolnir pendant is a faithful copy of a 10th century pendant. While the pendant is traditionally associated with the Kabbarp region in Norway, and therefore called the Kabbarp pendant, it was probably found in the Skane area of Sweden. It once belonged to Baron Claes Kurck before being donated to the Historical Museum in Stockholm.
While the original pendant was silver, this is handmade in copper alloy with a find aging patina. The handle of the hammer looks like the face of a helmeted warrior, or the face of a raven. Ravens were sacred to Odin, the principal god of the Norse pantheon and the god of war and wisdom. Seeing ravens was always a good omen.
