What does this jewelry represent?
Thor's hammer was the most popular ornament worn by the Vikings. It called on the divine protection of the god Thor.
More examples of this pendant survive from the Viking period than all other symbols combined. It is also the only Viking symbol that continued to be used well into the Christian period.
This fine bronze pendant recreates a classic Thor's hammer symbol from the Viking age.
The hammer sits within a ring, from which hands a snake. This is the serpent Jormungandr, who Thor is destined to fight to the death during Ragnarok.
Jormungandr represents all of men's deepest fears, but fears that must be faced just as Thor must face Jormungandr in the end.
