What does this jewelry represent?

Brooches were an essential piece of the Viking wardrobe. They were used to secure clothing in the time before zips and buttons. A culture of elaborately designed brooches based on mythology and culture quickly emerged in Scandinavia.

This bronze brooch is a replica of a brooch found in Uppakra in Sweden, dating to the 9th or 10th century.

The brooch features a raven, birds sacred to Odin, the most important Norse god, and the All-Father creator deity. He was also the Viking god of war, wisdom, wanderers, writing, witchcraft, and Valhalla.

Ravens acted as Odin's eyes and ears in the world and represented the importance of observing and planning before acting.

Seeing ravens circling the battlefield was a good sign, as it meant that Odin was present to take the bravest of the fallen dead to live in Valhalla. there they would live until they were called upon to fight again alongside the gods in the final battle of Ragnarok. This was the aspiration of all Viking warriors.
