The earring represents a serpent meant to be Jormungandr. The gods so feared this serpent that they threw him into the waters surrounding Midgard. There he grew to such an enormous size that he can encircle the entire world and hold his own tail in his mouth.
As such, the Midgard Serpent represents the things that men and gods fear most, but fears that much be faced or they can grow out of control. Thor is destined to fight to the death with Jormungandr at Ragnarok.
Within the curve of the serpent is a cross shape. It could represent the Christian cross of Thor's Hammer. The two looked very similar during the transition of the Vikings to Christianity. In both cases, it is a symbol of protection.
