While we often think of Finland as a Viking country, it was actually inhabited by a distinct Baltic group. But there was lots of contact between the Finns and the Swedish Vikings, and significant cultural exchange.
While the Vikings worshipped Thor, the Finns worshipped Ukko, the god of Thunder, a sky god, protector, and fertility deity. Rather than carrying a hammer, he carried an axe. But just as Thor's hammer Mjolnir was a symbol of protection, so was Ukko's axe Ukonvasara.
This beautiful bronze pendant is a replica of a 9th-century find from Ylipää / Lieto, in Finland. Geometric patterning is a common theme in both Finnish and Viking art from the period.
