The Vikings believed that their runic alphabet could be used to work magic. Many of the heroes of the sagas are described as masters of the runes.
Some of the Viking knowledge of rune magic has come down to us today through a number of Icelandic grimoires from the 18th century.
In these magical tomes, the runes are formed into staves, each designed for a different purpose.
Probably the most well-known of these staves is Aegishjalmur, otherwise called the Helm of Awe.
It was believed to be a symbol of protection. Warriors could paint it on their foreheads before going into battle to invoke the protection of Odin and enhance their own strength and courage.
This intricately crafted silver bead wraps two of the Aegishjalmur staves around a central band. It is a subtle but potent way to align with these powerful Viking forces.
