Sleipnir, the eight-legged steed of Odin, was often called the world's best horse.
It was known for its strength, courage and speed, and its eight legs allowed it to move between the worlds of Norse myth in a way that other animals could not.
Odin once lent Sleipnir to Hermod so that he could travel down to Helheim and treat with the goddess Hel.
Sleipnir is also an impossible being, as Loki is his mother.
One day, as part of his tricks, Loki needed to take on the form of a beautiful mare to distract the attention on the mighty stallion Svadilfari.
The ruse was successful, and as a result, Loki became pregnant with Sleipnir. When he was born, he gave the steed to Odin.
This is a marked countrast to what happened to Loki's other three children, Fenrir, Jormungandr and Hel, who were all cast out and placed where they could do the least harm.
Thus, Sleipnir represented many things to the Vikings.
He was a steed that could carry his rider to any destination with courage, strength and speed. He was an impossible being, and he was also proof that you can rise to be more than the sum of your parents.
This stylish silver ring places a traditional image of Sleipnir in an authentic Mammen style-design, a style of Norse art that was popular in Denmark in the second half of the 10th century, creating something authentic and memorable.
