Runes and their meanings :
The first writing systems developed and used by the Scandinavians and other Germanic peoples were runic alphabets. Runes functioned like letters, but they were much more than just letters. Each rune was an ideographic or pictographic symbol of a cosmological principle or power.
To write a rune was to invoke and direct the force it represented. Indeed, in all Germanic languages, the word "rune" (from Proto-Germanic runo ) means both "letter" and "secret" or "mystery". Its original meaning, which probably predates the adoption of the runic alphabet, may simply have been "a (silent) message".
