Many Viking warriors threw themselves into battle with an axe in hand, demonstrating a ferociousness and fearlessness that made their foes tremble.
But were the Vikings really braver than the men that they were facing?
The Vikings had many rituals and practices that were designed to give them strength in the face of fear and courage in the face of death.
One such practice involved using the Helm of Awe, a runic symbol that gave the user the courage to face their foe and either defeat them, or fate bravely enough to earn their place in Valhalla.
A version of the Helm of Awe symbol is recorded in the Icelandic magical grimoires. This fine bronze axe pendant is embossed with this magical stave.
