What does this jewelry represent?
Few symbols are more representative of the Viking world than the axe. Not only did warriors carry axes into battle, but most Vikings wore an axe on their belt to deal with every day tasks.
This sterling silver axe pendant is decorated with the image of a serpent, its body elongated and twisted to form patterns in a classic Norse design style.
This serpent is Jormungandr, one of the sons of Loki. The gods so feared the snake that they threw the infant Jormungandr into the sea surrounding Midgard. There he gew to such an enormous size that he can encircle the entire world and hold his own tail in his mouth.
The Midgard Serpent will only drop his tail at Ragnarok, the end of days, when he is destined to fight to the death with Thor. The god of thunder will face the serpent, despite knowing his fate, as the only way to face fears is head on.
