What does this jewelry represent?

Brooches were an essential piece of Viking jewelry. They were used to keep clothes in place before the time of buttons and zippers. Today, the right brooch can add instant Viking style to any look.

This stunning bronze brooch is a replica of one found at the 11th-century burial site of Lindholm Høje, near Aalborg in Denmark.

The brooch displays ‘the Great Beast’ motif, featuring a larger animal intertwined by a lesser serpent, which is an extremely common in the Urnes style

The serpent almost certainly represents Jormungandr, the Midgard Serpent. The gods so feared the young serpent that they threw him into the waters surrounding Midgard. There he grew to such a great size that he can encircle the entire world. He will only emerge from his waters at Ragnarok when he is destined to poison the world and fight to the death with Thor.

Jormungandr represents the things that we fear most. But these things must be faced. When they are ignored, they only grow.
