The Oroborus is a snake that curls its body into a circle and holds its own tail in its mouth. It is associated with the unending cycle of birth, death, and renewal that forms life.
In Norse mythology, Jormungandr is the embodiment of the Oroborus. One of the children of Loki, the gods so feared the power of this serpent that they threw him in the water surrounding Midgard, the world of men.
There the serpent grew to such an enormous size that he encircles the entire world and holds his own tail in his mouth.
He will only drop his tail at Ragnarok, the Viking apocalypse, when he is destined to emerge from the waters and fight to the death with the god Thor, the protector of mankind. The two will slay one another.
For this reason, for the Vikings, Jormungandr also represents the fears of men and gods, which must always be faced in the end.
This stunning sterling silver pendant shows Jormungandr as the Oroborus. On the inside of the circle formed by the serpent are the Viking runes, which were not only an alphabet but a magical toolkit for those who knew how to use them.
This pendant represents fears that must be faced, and the strengths, weapons, and powers needed to overcome them.
