The Vikings believed in the power of symbols. One of the most potent symbols that we hear about both in the Viking age sagas and the 18th century Icelandic magical grimoires is the Helm of Awe.
Viking warriors woould paint the symbol on their head to invite the favor of the god Odin. The Viking god of war, wisdom, and wanderers, it would ensure the user strength and courage in battle.
Anyone using the symbol was also promised success. They would either defeat their enemies, or show he appropriate bravery to be taken to Valhalla after death.
This sterling silver ring takes the Helm of Awe, known as Aegishjalmur, as its signet. The band is decorated by two ravens, which are symbols of Odin.
Seeing ravens circling the battlefield was considered a good sign, as it meant that Odin and his Valkyries were present to choose the honorable dead to take to Valhalla.
This is the idea piece for a modern warrior seeking the favor of Odin and the courage to face their foes.
