So much Viking jewelry, both ancient and modern, celebrates Thor, the god of thunder and the protector of mankind.
But this detailed sterling silver piece references the god in a different way.
The scene depicted on the pendant is Thor fishing with the giant Hymir. Thor insists on rowing into the deepest waters and using the largest bate, despite knowing that his nemesis Jormungandr, the Midgard serpent, lives under the waters.
Thor actually catches Jormungandr on his line, and starts to pull him up. But Hymir, knowing the prophecy that Thor and Jormungandr can only encounter one another at Ragnarok, the end of the world, cuts the line.
For this, Thor kills Hymir by throwing him overboard.
In this way, this pendant marks Thor's bravery and strength, but also his hubris. It is a reminder that none of us is without faults.
The pendant also celebrates the strength and volatility of the chaotic force that is Jormungadr, who is inset in gold.
This is the perfect pendant for anyone who wants to honor Thor, but also wants something completely different.
