The Vikings regularly used bone and horn in the making of their jewelry and weapons. They believed that in doing so they could channel the spirit of dead ancestors, whose bones were often used, or the spirit of the animal.
Antler, bone, and ivory pieces survive from throughout the Viking world. They were often used for combs and pins, and they items themselves could be simple or elaboratly decorated.
This find, horn-shaped pendant is itricately engraved in a style that would have appealed to the Vikings. Pieces like this made from bear bones may have been worn by Berserker warriors, who channeled the spirit of the bear before going into battle.
