The Valknut - the "knot of dead warriors" - was one of the most important symbols among Viking warriors. It represented Valhalla, the hall of Odin where warriors that died bravely in battle were taken to live in the afterlife.
There the warriors feast and fight, until they are called on again to fight alongside the gods in the final battle of Ragnarok.

Ā

The Valknut was often placed on grave goods, of both men and women. It was either meant to show that the deceased was worthy, and now dwelling in Valhalla.

Or it was meant to call on Odin and his Valkyries and ask them to take the fallen soul there.

Warriors that did not die in battle were often buried with a sword in hand to try and trick Odin and the Valkyries into thinking that they had died fighting.

Thus, the Valknut is a symbol of the bravery of the Viking warrior, and respect for those who have gone before us.

It also represents the fact that the veil between the worlds is not as strong as we imagine, and that Valhalla is closer than we think.

Invoke this symbol for yourself with these striking Valknut design button earrings.Ā
