The ring takes the form of a snake, this is Jormungandr, the Midgard Serpent. One of the children of Loki, the gods so feared the snake that they threw it into the waters surrounding Midgard. There he grew to such an enormous size that he encircles the entire world and holds his own tail in his mouth.
Jormungandr will only drop his tail at Ragnarok. According to the prophecy for this apocalypse, Jormungandr and Thor are destined to right one another, and kill one another.
As such, for the Vikings, Jormungandr represented the greatest fears of men and gods, but fears that must be faced.
