What does this jewelry represent?
Snakes were a potent symbol in Viking culture.
The most famous snake was Jormungandr, the giant sea snake that lived in the waters surrounding Midgard.
He is destined to fight to the death with Thor during Ragnarok. For the Vikings, he represented all of man's greatest fears.
But these are fears that must be faced, just as Thor must face Jormungandr at the end of days.
This sterling silver pendant uses a traditional Norse serpent motif, with the body of the serpent curled around into a pattern.
It curls around a circle bearing the runes. To the Vikings, the runes were more than just an alphabet, but also a magical toolkit that could influence the world.
The runes are one of the many tools a warrior has at their disposal to overcome their Jormungandr.
