Ravens were sacred to Odin, the All-Father, a creator deity and the god of war, wisdom, writing, wanderers, witchcraft, and Valhalla.
When Odin chose to wander the world, he was always accompanied by his two ravens Huginn (thought) and Muninn (memory). Seeing ravens circling the battlefield was considered a good omen as it meant that Odin was there to choose the bravest among the dead to take to Valhalla.
This pendant features the Viking raven encircled by the runes. The Vikings believed that the runes could work magic. Even the Norns, the Norse fates, used the runes to write destiny. Odin hung himself from Yggdrasil for nine days and nine nights while pierced by his own spear to learn the secrets of the runes, which he shared with mankind.
