What does this jewelry represent?
The Urnes artistic style was popular in Scandinavia in the 11th and 12th centuries.
The style often represented animals, with their bodies elongated to impossible lengths, and twisted around itself in a continuous line to create elaborate patterns.
One of the animals most used in this art form was serpents.
The most infamous Norse serpent was Jormungandr, the Midgard Serpent. The gods so feared this snake that they threw him into the sea surrounding Midgard where he grew to such an enormous size that he could encircle the entire world.
Jormungandr represents the greatest fears of both men and gods, but these are fears that must be faced.
Thor, the strongest of the Norse gods, is destined to fight to the death with Jormungadr during the final battle of Ragnarok. But Thor must face this trial, even though his death is foretold.
This stylish ring is both an authentic piece of Viking art, and a way to mark a "no fear" attitude to life.
