The Valknut, which means knot of dead warriors in Norwegian, was the symbol of Valhalla, and the Viking warrior mentality that allowed them to be fearless in the face of death.
There was no greater honor among the Vikings than to die bravely in battle.
It meant that they would be taken by the Valkyries to Valhalla, the hall of Odin, there to live in a warrior's paradise until they are called on to fight alongside the king of the gods in the final battle of Ragnarok.
This belief was part of the reason that the Vikings could go into battle so bravely. Death on the battlefield was not to be feared.
The Valknut is found throughout the Viking world, always in association with the dead, or with Odin.
It is believed that it was used either to indicate that the deceased was already in Ragnarok, or to call on the Valkyries to take him there.
It may also have worked to ward off other spirits responsible for taking dead souls to Helheim, the other Norse afterlife.
As such, the Valknut represents the courage of a Viking warrior.
Mark your own with this detailed sterling silver ring featuring the Valknut, and also the runes "Hail Odin", recognizing the god of the Viking warriors.
