What does this jewelry represent ?
Ravens were an important symbol in Viking culture associated with Odin, the All-Father and a creator god. He was also the Viking god of war, wisdom, wanderers, writing, witchcraft, and Valhalla.
Ravens were his familiars and would often act as his eyes and ears in the world. He was always accompanied by two ravens called Huginn (thought) and Muninn (memory). It was a good omen to see ravens circling the battlefield, as it meant that Odin was there to take the bravest fallen warriors to Valhalla.
Odin was a god of war but also wisdom, and the ravens represented the importance of watching and observing. We are born with two eyes, two ears, but only one moith.
This raven amulet is based on items found in Gotland in Sweden in the 7th century. It makes the perfect piece of the modern Viking.
