What does this jewelry represent?

One of the best know stories and bravery and sacrifice from Norse mythology is the story of Fenrir and Tyr.

Fenrir was a mighty wolf, a son of Loki with the giantess Angrboda. The gods so feared the potentially destructive force of this mighty wolf that they decided to imprison him with magical chains made by the dwarves.

But Fenrir was so strong that they could not force the chains on to him, and so instead tricked him into putting them on himself, saying that it was a game that would give him an opportunity to show his great strength.

Sensibly suspicious, Fenrir said that he would only participate in the game if one of the gods would put their arm in his mouth as insurance.

Knowing the trick, none of the gods wanted to do it, knowing that they would surely lose their arm. Only Tyr, one of the Viking war gods, had the courage to do it and make this sacrifice for the security of his people.

Tyr lost his arm, but the gods successfully imprisoned Fenrir. He remains imprisoned, destined to break his chains at Ragnarok, the end of the world, when he will get his revenge on the gods.

This striking sterling silver pendant represents this story, and is a symbol of the ferociousness of nature, the courage and sacrifice of Tyr, and the promised revenge of Fenrir.
