The runes not only represented text for the Vikings, but were also symbols of important concepts and ideas.
As well as representing these ideas, when used correctly, the runes had the power to make these ideas real. Thus the runes were not just a script, for those who understood them, they also gave power to shape the world around them.
This distinctive silver pendant represents the Tyr symbol, named after the Norse god Tyr, and represented victory.
Tyr was a warrior god, who may have been considered the chief diety in proto-Viking times, before he was displaced by Odin.
He was certainly the bravest of the gods. He was the only god with the courage to place his hand in the mouth of the wolf Fenrir in order to tether the wolf and minimise the harm that he could do.
He placed his hand in the wolf's mouth, fully aware that Fenrir would bite off his hand.
Thus, the Tyr rune represents victory, but also what is required to suceed, Courage, and sometimes self-sacrifice.
Invoke these potent viking ideas in you own life.
