Jormungandr, the Midgard Serpent, is one of the most terrifying creatures in Norse mythology. For the Vikings, he represented the power of nature and the inevitability of fate.

One of the children of Loki with the giantess Angrboda, the gods so feared Jormungandr that they threw the serpent into the sea that surrounds Midgard. There. he grew to such a size that he encircled the world and held his own tail in his mouth.

According to the Ragnarok prophecy, Jormungandr will only drop his tail when the end of the world comes. He will then fight to the death with Thor, and the god and the serpent will kill one another.

Jormungandr was a powerful natural force to be respected. He also represented the inevitability of fate, that even the gods could not avoid.

This signet ring depicts Jormungandr intertwined in on himself in the typical Mammen style, popular in Denmark in the 10th century.
