While we know that the Vikings used their runic alphabet for magic, little evidence survives of how exactly this was done. But we do know how their Icelandic descendants used the runes to create magical runic staves thanks to some surviving grimoires.
Probably the most famous runic stave preserved in these books is Aegishjalmur, more commonly known as the Helm of Awe. It is designed to call the favor of the gods in battle so that they will grant protection and strength.
If you use the rune properly, you will be successful in battle or earn your way to Valhalla.
