Brief History of Loki & Jormungandr
Loki is one of the most prominent figures in Norse mythology. He belongs to the race of Jotunn (giants) but lived among the Aesir gods due to a blood brotherhood pact that he made with Odin near the start of time.
Loki is often the source of the problems that the gods face, but he also helps them solve those problems. He convinced the gods to trick the builder of the walls of Asgard and then had to help them avoid paying their debts. He cut off the fine hair of the goddess Sif and then had to replace it with something equally as fine.
But the gods never fully trusted Loki. When he and the giantess Angrboda had three children - the wolf Fenrir, the serpent Jormungandr, and the half-dead Hel - the gods were so horrified by the offspring of their monstrous union that they banished and imprisoned each.
Jormungandr was thrown into the waters surrounding Midgard and became known as the Midgard Serpent. There he grew to such an enormous size that he can encircle the whole world and hold his own tail in his mouth.
Loki then took his tricker in Asgard too far and ended up orchestrating the death of Odin's son Balder. For this, he was finally cast out of Asgard and chained to three rocks for eternity.
But at Ragnarok, both Loki and Jormungandr will break free from their prisons. With Loki's other children and other enemies of the gods, they will march on Asgard and cause the destruction of the universe as we know it.
