Jormungandr, also known as the Midgard Serpent, represented the ultimate threat in Norse mythology.
A son of Loki, the serpent was thrown into the waters around Midgard in order to keep him out of trouble.
There he grew to such a great size that he was able to hold his own tail in his mouth.
There is also nursed his grudge against the gods of Asgard for their treatment of him, and his family members.
According to the Ragnarok prophecy, when the end of the world arrives, Jormungandr will drop his tail and emerge from the ocean, spewing his poisonous venom into the air, killing the world. He will then battle with Thor.
Although Thor will slay the beast, he will spew so much of his venom onto the god that he too will die.
Thus, Jormungandr represents the greatest threat possible, but also the greatest opportunity for bravery.
Thor will face the serpent, despite his fate being sealed. He must find courage in the face of almost certain defeat.
