This is not a coincidence of preservation — it is a reflection of how central Mjolnir was to every aspect of Viking life. It was worn for divine protection by farmers, warriors and chieftains alike. The Mythology Behind the Symbol
Mjolnir was forged in Svartalheim by the dwarven craftsmen — the finest makers in the Norse universe. Loki, present during the forging, sabotaged the process midway through, causing the hammer to emerge with an unusually short handle. Despite this flaw, the gods judged it the finest of all the treasures brought before them. Thor used it to fight the giants who threatened the ordered world, generating thunder with every strike. What did Mjolnir actually look like in the Viking age?
Viking age Mjolnir pendants vary significantly in form — some broad and symmetrical, others narrow and elongated. The most famous single find is the Mammen Village hammer from Denmark, reproduced here in bronze and gold. Most authentic pendants have a loop at the top for suspension and were worn close to the body. The unusually short handle referenced in the mythology is visible in many archaeological examples.
Is this the same Mjolnir as in the Marvel films?
No. The Marvel version — which can only be lifted by the worthy — has no basis in Norse mythology. In the original sources, what made Mjolnir exceptional was the power of Thor himself, not a restriction on who could hold it. The original Mjolnir was also far smaller than the film versions — worn as a pendant around the neck.
